Woman Eats Melon; Burps Out Twin Boys
Vernelle Burps Twins
LOUISIANA, MO -- A Louisiana woman ate an entire watermelon this week and unexpectedly gave burp to twin baby boys. The burp took place Monday at Pike County Memorial Hospital.

The hospital emergency room staff was astonished when the woman, identified as Vernelle Kam McElfresh, was carried into the hospital in a large bushel basket by her husband.

Doctors examined Mrs. McElfresh and determined that only one watermelon posed no danger and would probably result in a single burp.

Staff physician Dr. Joe Martin, who surpervised the twin burp, said, "I've never seen anything like it. We seldom have multiple burps around here."

Assisting nurses reportedly were suspicious about the woman's condition when they examined her protruding abdomen prior to the burp. One nurse was heard saying, "You don't have two of them in there, do you honey?" just as the patient was wheeled away to surgery.

The twin boys were named "Baby A" and "Baby B", and weighed just over four pounds. Mrs. McElfresh had never before experienced a burp of such magnitude.

The burp registered just over 6.2 on the Burpee scale.

PIX NOTES

Vernelle was somewhat embarassed that I'd put this photograph on the Internet where 30 to 60-million people could view it anytime while in the privacy of their homes. I assured her that less than 10-percent of all Internet users would see the photo.

This picture was taken just one week before she gave birth to our twin boys, Joshua and Jonathan. It was taken just over one year after we moved from Hawaii to Missouri.

The boys were born in Pike County Memorial Hospital in Louisiana and were named Baby "A" and Baby "B" until we came up with real names.

Vernelle gained just over twenty pounds during the pregnancy.

Most of the weight was lost in the first few months during the horrific exercise period of changing diapers, pumping breasts (you should see that photo) waking in the middle of the night, preparing meals, and wondering if parenthood is really worth it.

We still wonder.
