Family Paddles To Hawaii
Mother, Sons Row Small Boat From California
WAIKOLOA, HI -- Two teenage boys and their mother paddled from California to Hawaii this week.

The family landed their paddle boat near the Hilton Waikoloa Resort on the Big Island.

Medical officials examined the trio today and said they were well tanned and in apparent good health. The mother, identified as Vernelle McElfresh, said her boys were also hungry and thirsty after not eating for over four hours.

The supplies and equipment the family used on the 2,500 mile trek from California included a solar panel for electricity, microwave, refrigerator, electric blanket, stereo, television, and a Nintendo GameBoy.

PHOTO NOTES

We're still on that vacation to the Big Island. This is still the Hilton Waikoloa Resort.

Still Nice. Still Expensive.

I got sunburned here. On top of my head.

One of the highlights was playing around in the pool. You'd think we get enough water sports living in Hawaii.

One day I'll get a photograph of Vernelle trying to surf. If I could do a video it'd make America's Funniest Home Videos for sure.

I'm still taller than Vernelle.

The photo in the story above was taken while on vacation in mid 1995.
