101 Things To Do. Today. Now!
There's more to do than I can do. Even with a To Do List.
There’s no question that we live in a busy society. There’s more on our daily plates than a Blue Plate Special plate can hold. Even with vegetables on the side. Recently, I’ve become mentally overwhelmed by the number of projects on my ‘Blue Plate’ and the small number of projects that actually seem to get done. Something’s wrong. My first thought was that I wasn’t organized efficiently. Then I thought there were simply too many things on the daily to do list. Getting more efficient and removing items from the list didn’t seem to reduce the nagging feeling that there were still 101 things to do today, and I wasn’t getting enough of them done to make a difference. Nothing improves without change. So I changed something. Yes, I still have a Do List. One must keep track of things to do. The ‘new’ Do List, though, has a few new items. These are things I want to do. No, not yoga, not more beach time (thinking about it…), not a new computer, not another vacation, or more projects. The new items on the Do List are items that I truly want to do; some above all other items (which seem to get treated with equal importance, and left undone with equal disdain). Included on the list is my daily journal. I’ve wanted to write a journal for years. My computer specialty is content management systems, which are ideally suited for a journal. The pipes always leak in a plumber’s house. The personal online journal is high on my new list. Maybe that’s being selfish, but I have some things to say. 101 Things To Say. Daily. Chances are good the house will still get cleaned, the clothes will get washed, dried, and folded. I’ll continue to shave and take a bath and brush my teeth. Those are good things. I plan to write about what’s on my mind and share a few family photographs from time to time. My new To Do list isn’t using larger paper or disappearing ink. Near the top are a few projects and items that I actually want to do. Some of them need to come first. They need to come before washing the car, taking the broken blender to be fixed, searching for a new Intel-based server so I can learn FreeBSD. Hmmmm. Reading a book sounds like a good item for the list. Writing a few daily letters to friends and family. That’s the secret. ‘Daily.’ Doing something daily gets things done. Doing daily (at least a few items) what I want to do and look forward to doing, is even better. I’ve got 101 things to do today. This is the first. Additional musings and nonsense can be read on the McElfresh.org site (with photos, stories, a photo gallery, and an audio podcast). Should you require non-licorice tasting musings, try RonMcElfresh.com. No photos, no podcasts-- no holds barred musings for the thoughtful generation. Either way, it's the same price.
